Software News: Production Tools for Studios and Creative Teams

Software coverage focused on production tooling — the applications teams use to build things, and the pipeline problems that appear as projects and teams grow.

Most of what is written about creative software is feature announcements. The more useful subject is what actually goes wrong in production: asset naming drifting past the point of searchability, dependencies that resolve on one workstation and nowhere else, licences nobody can locate when a publisher asks, and colour configurations that produce plausible but incorrect images.

These problems are largely independent of studio size. A five-person team hits them with the same force as a large facility, and usually without a pipeline department to absorb them.

Editorial Data Shouldn’t Need Manual Translation Every Time It Changes Hands

One team sends an EDL, another needs OTIO, a third exports FCPXML. A free local-first browser tool for cut conversion, timecode maths and event inspection.

Catch Colour-Management Problems Before They Become Render Problems

A misspelled colour space or an unresolved role produces images that are wrong but not obviously broken. Validating an OpenColorIO config before it spreads across a show.
