Space coverage centred on the commercial industry rather than exploration milestones. Launch cadence and cost, satellite constellations, ground infrastructure and the businesses being built on top of all three.
Launch cost is the variable that moves everything else. As price per kilogram falls, activities that were previously uneconomic become ordinary, which is why launch cadence is a better indicator of where the industry is heading than any individual mission.
The downstream businesses — imaging, connectivity, positioning — are where most commercial value ultimately lands, and where the customers are terrestrial.
Australia's involvement is mostly downstream and ground-based: tracking stations, launch sites in development, earth-observation analytics and agricultural applications of positioning data. That is a less glamorous position than building rockets, and a more defensible one, since ground infrastructure is geographically constrained in a way manufacturing is not.
Satellite connectivity is the part reaching ordinary businesses fastest. Direct-to-device services are closing coverage gaps that mattered a great deal to anyone operating outside metropolitan areas.
