What a design invoice should make explicit

• The project name and the deliverables it covers
• Concepts and revision rounds included, and how many were used
• Additional rounds beyond the agreed number, priced separately
• The licence granted — what the client may use the work for, and where
• Whether source files are included, and at what point they transfer
• Stock imagery, fonts and print costs passed through at cost
• Your ABN, GST, and payment terms

The licence line is the one that saves the argument

Design disputes are almost never about the fee. They are about a logo drawn for a local café turning up on national packaging, or a client asking for the working files eighteen months later. Both are licensing questions, and both are settled cheaply if the invoice says what was actually bought.

• State the licence in a sentence a non-lawyer can read: what, where, how long
• Say plainly whether copyright transfers, and if so, on what event — usually final payment
• Price the source files as a deliverable if that is what they are, rather than giving them away by habit

Getting paid on creative work

• Take a deposit before concepts; it is the industry norm and clients expect it
• Invoice each milestone on delivery rather than holding everything to the end
• Watermark presentation files until the invoice covering them is paid
