Financial Planning Invoice Template
Financial advice invoice. Example: Statement of Advice preparation $2,200, Implementation $800.
What a financial advice invoice should set out
- Which advice document it relates to — Statement of Advice, Record of Advice, or review
- The client or clients by name, and the entity if the advice was for a trust or fund
- Preparation, presentation and implementation priced separately
- Whether the fee is being paid directly or deducted from a product, and which product
- The period covered, for an ongoing service fee
- Your ABN, AFSL or authorised representative number
- GST treatment, which differs between advice and implementation — confirm it for your services
Fee disclosure and the invoice are the same conversation
Advice fees are regulated in a way most professional fees are not. Ongoing fee arrangements require consent and renewal, and the client must be able to see what they are paying for each year. An invoice that simply says “advice fee” does not meet the spirit of that, whatever the paperwork says elsewhere.
- Mirror the wording of the fee disclosure document, so the two agree
- Separate the one-off advice fee from the ongoing service fee — they renew on different terms
- Where a fee is deducted from a platform, still issue the invoice; the client is entitled to see it
Practice housekeeping
- File the invoice against the advice document, not only against the client
- Record the consent that authorises any deduction from a product
- Keep the records for the period your licensee requires, which may exceed five years
