Accounting Invoice Template
Accountant invoice for tax/BAS. Example: FY2025 Tax Return preparation $550, BAS lodgement $180/qtr.
What an accounting practice invoice has to show
- The engagement it relates to — tax return, BAS, management accounts — and the period covered
- Which entity the work was for, by name and ABN, when you act for a family group
- Each service priced on its own line, so a client can see what the return cost and what the BAS cost
- ASIC fees, ATO charges and search costs shown as disbursements, not folded into your fee
- The words “Tax invoice”, your ABN, the issue date and a unique number
- GST shown separately, or a statement that the total includes GST
- Your payment terms and the account the client should pay into
Billing a compliance job without an argument at the end
Compliance work drifts. A tax return quoted on last year’s file grows an extra trust distribution, a rental schedule and two hours of chasing a bank statement. Clients rarely dispute the fee itself — they dispute finding out about it at the end. The invoice is easier when the file note that justifies it was written at the time, not reconstructed in June.
- Quote the annual compliance cycle as a whole, then invoice it in instalments, so the client sees one number and pays it four times
- List out-of-scope work as its own line with a date, not as an unexplained increase on last year
- Separate the lodgement from the advice — clients value them differently and will query a blended fee
Before you send it
- Check the entity name against the ABR — billing the trustee when the work was for the trust causes problems later
- Confirm the client has signed the engagement letter for anything outside the original scope
- Keep the invoice and its supporting file note for five years
